Your administrative users will need the ability to associate one or more process owners to a workgroup. A process owner has the sole responsibility of modifying a process. Providing more than one process owner allows your users' managers the ability to have surrogate process owners in case one of them is sick, out of town for meetings, or on vacation. |

Ordered Sequence of Roles in Workgroups |

Some process require that several roles be ordered in sequence in order to create a finished product. Your application should let the user define such a sequence. In this strategy, the sequence is as follows: |

1. A time-sensitive task is assigned to the first user of the first role in the workgroup. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
2. If the user is not able to do the task by the task's deadline, your application automatically routes the task to the next user with the same role. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
The ordered sequence should be defined in the database. That way, your application simply looks up the sequence and applies the routing based on the information it receives. You can do the same thing for weighted workgroups, where the ordered sequence is dependent on which role and user has the greatest weight (a percentage value that represents relative importance). |

Your application should give the process owner the ability to determine the cost of a given process. This helps the process owner assess the process benefits against its actual cost. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Task management is concerned with the assignment of tasks to roles and users behind the roles. In administering this assignment, task management tracks the buildup of tasks in queues, rolling back tasks, and times when tasks are completed. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Some process owners need the ability to queue their tasks at the workgroup level. That is, instead of immediately routing tasks to an individual, tasks are routed to a workgroup queue. This way, users receive a task once they're free to work on it. Having this capability is beneficial for those environments where more than one user implements a role. |
